Bone-eating Snot Flower (Osedax mucofloris)



Worms:

  • first discovered in Monterey Bay, California, in February 2002
  • bore into the bones of whale carcasses to reach enclosed lipids
  • exposed part covered in a ball of mucus, hence the name snotty
  • have no eyes, legs, mouth or stomach.
